Pierino Ronald "Perry" Como was an American singer and television personality. During a career lasting more than 50 years, he recorded exclusively for the RCA Victor label after signing with them in 1943. "Mr. C.", as he was nicknamed, sold millions of records for Radio Corporation of America and pioneered a weekly musical variety television show, which set the standards for the genre and was one of the most successful in television history. Perry’s original recording of “Goodbye Sue” was his first recording with the RCA Victor Records label on June 20, 1943. The song was recorded acappella (having vocal background only) due to the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) recording strike which lasted until late 1943. After the strike was over, “Goodbye Sue” was recorded again on July 31, 1944 with orchestral background and was released through the government V-Disc program. Ever since Como’s TV debut, “relaxed” had been the word that appeared most frequently in Como’s TV reviews, an image that grew naturally out of Como’s own personality. In later years, Como usually dismissed questions about it with jokes like “I think I was born old” or simply attributed his easy-going nature to his father.

Perry had usually appeared in a lounge suit and tie, which in black and white always looked the same. Bob Finkel was the first producer to cast his star in casual dress - the “Perry Como cardigan”.

I was thinking of the little-fellows like I used to be. They’d sit in front of their TV set and say, “Okay, Como, let’s see what makes you worth all that dough.”
